Barista Exchange Meet Up D.C.

The moment that made you the barista you are today???

I would love to know this from you all...the more I learn and become involved in this industry/ /culture, the thirstier I get. So do tell of your defining moments, lessons learned, lightbulb epiphanies, taste awakenings, etc.

I've had some...but still looking for that big bang you know? I guess this post could be a poorly diguised fishing for "you've got to try THIS" suggestions.

OK...go!

Hmm lets see, I also had a few moments. THe first moment was during one of my barista rookie shifts. It was a really slow morning, so they let me play on the machine, and then we got slammed, somehow they let me stay on the machine. After the hour-long rush, I realized that i did it all on my own, i had done it! not only did i just get by, but my shots were consistent, and the milk was steamed well everytime. I was so happy that day.

Another moment was about three months after that, I was sipping on a cup of Ethiopian Harrar, and i didn't know much about flavor profiles, or tasting coffee at this point. I was really dragging that day, so i added a shot of espresso to my black coffee, and i tasted it......what the hell?? It tasted like someone put a shot of blueberry syrup in my coffee. I was a little upset that someone would mess with my coffee, but then i realized that it was just the flavor of the Ethiopan coffee (theres also some of the same ethiopian in our espresso blend) coming through like crazy. I was freaking out, i didnt know coffee could taaste like that; it inspired me and my thirst to learn more was unquenchable.

The most recent time, was when i left for Mexico. I left the coffee shop i started at, the coffee shop i had grown into the barista i am today, to work in a seasonal coffee shop in Hidalgo, Mexico. The person I looked up to the most my shop gave me props, she said i was the best barista that had been through here, she went into detail about where i started and where i was that day....i had never realized how much i had truly grown, i never thought in a million years this is how it would end up. But im so glad.

Those are my moments, i hope the help you somehow, but in all reality, you just need to be thirsty for it...something will spontaneously happen and it will hit you. It could be as simple as conquering a rush on your own.
